Xi'an Ultrafiltration - Innovation Drives Business Growth

 At the 2009 China International Gas and Heating Technology and Equipment Exhibition held in Xi'an, the editor of Bo Ran Network interviewed Mr. Li Daming, the general manager of Xi'an United Ultrafiltration Purification Equipment Co., Ltd. The following is the interview transcript.
Editor of Borang Network: Could you briefly introduce your company?
Li Daming: Xi'an Ultrafiltration's headquarters is located in the national-level Xi'an High-tech Industrial Development Zone. It is a well-known brand enterprise in China that specializes in the research, production and operation of fluid separation and purification equipment. In June 1994, Xi'an United Ultrafiltration Purification Equipment Co., Ltd. was established, which attracted attention in the industry for its high starting point, high speed and strong awareness of scientific innovation and market orientation. In January 1998, together with Xi'an High-tech Zone Venture Capital Company and Hong Kong, Xi'an Ultrafiltration Purification Engineering Co., Ltd. was established based on its excellent market foundation. Subsequently, to improve the product structure and develop regional advantages, in 1999, Hangzhou Ultrafiltration Company was established in Hangzhou, and in 2004, Zhuhai United Ultrafiltration Purification Equipment Co., Ltd. was established in Zhuhai. At the beginning of the new decade, Xi'an Ultrafiltration aimed to achieve the expansion of Western enterprises to the east and the "internationalization" strategic goal, and in 2005, it established the Xi'an Ultrafiltration Wuxi Branch in the East China region. Currently, Xi'an Ultrafiltration has achieved domestic leading R&D and production capabilities in the field of fluid separation and purification, and has become one of the enterprises with the strongest technological innovation, scale operation, group operation capabilities and the most complete product varieties and highest technical level in the same industry. Especially in the special application fields such as medium and high pressure, process gas, and large non-standard equipment, it has unique characteristics and rich design and manufacturing experience.

 
Editor of Borang Network: Since its establishment, the company has gone through fifteen years. What kind of hardworking journey has it experienced?
Li Daming: Our company belongs to the industry of compressed gas purification. In 2006, the industry association was established, and our company was elected as the vice-chairman unit of the association. I am the chairperson of the industry's standard technical committee. All these further demonstrate that our company is a leading enterprise in the industry. This is also due to our company's innovation ability, and our technology has always been at the forefront of the country.
In the early stage of entrepreneurship, several shareholders started the business with enthusiasm and overcame difficulties. In the second stage, they used venture capital to establish a joint venture company. They purchased land, built houses and settled down in the High-tech Zone. In the third stage, they established a foothold in the Three North regions (Northwest, North China, and Northeast) and became a local brand. In the fourth stage, they went beyond the west and expanded to the whole country. In Hangzhou, they established Hangzhou Ultrafiltration, and in Zhuhai, they established Zhuhai Ultrafiltration. The eastern and western regions combined, taking advantage of our company's capital, brand advantages and resources and markets in East China and South China. At that time, the main products were ordinary compressed air products. With the construction of the West-to-East Gas Pipeline, our company entered the natural gas industry starting from 2001, and accelerated in 2004 and 2005. At this time, we encountered problems such as market capacity, industrial chain and logistics. As a western enterprise, we were unable to solve them. Therefore, the company decided to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, with a production area three times that of the Xi'an factory, to provide components for compressor manufacturers in East China and serve as the company's (group) export base. Currently, the exports are mainly targeted at Eastern Europe, Arabia, Africa and Southeast Asia.
Editor of Boran Network: From your previous conversation, it can be seen that you and your company attach great importance to technological innovation. Could you elaborate on this?
Li Daming: I have always believed that innovation is the foundation of an enterprise, including institutional innovation, structural innovation, etc. However, the most fundamental and core aspect for an enterprise is technological innovation. The advantages of Xi'an Ultrafiltration precisely lie in this. Xi'an has a relatively obvious talent advantage. It ranks third in the number of universities nationwide, and the proportion of university graduates and engineers is also the third in the country. Xi'an Ultrafiltration has seized this talent advantage and, instead of competing with coastal enterprises in terms of production volume and scale, it focuses on developing high-tech and high-value-added products. Innovation encompasses two aspects. One is independent innovation, firmly grasping Xi'an's talent advantage, continuously developing new technologies and new products. Currently, our company has obtained 14 authorized patents. We have also undertaken the national火炬 program project in 1998 and national new products， and have twice received the Innovation Fund from the Ministry of Science and Technology. Currently， we are using the technology of recovering and utilizing associated gas and flared gas from oil fields and related patents to apply for the third Innovation Fund. The other aspect is absorbing and digesting foreign new technologies and tracking their technological development trends. Our company has performed exceptionally well in this regard. Within 10 years， we have sent 20 people on multiple occasions to participate in exhibitions in Germany， visit foreign counterparts， learn their advanced technologies， and absorb their experience. Currently， Xi'an Ultrafiltration has only a 2-3-year technology gap with foreign brand enterprises and is 5-10 years ahead of domestic counterparts. And foreign counterparts will definitely visit and pay visits to our company when they come to China.
Editor of Borang Network: In the current global economic downturn, how did your company respond?
Li Daming: In China, natural gas only accounts for 3% of the country's primary energy sources. However, it has reached over 24% in foreign markets. Therefore, the foreign market is extremely important. During this financial crisis, the natural gas market abroad also shrank. But we also noticed that the international oil price dropped from $147 per barrel to $47 per barrel, and has now returned to the $70 per barrel level. We believe that the oil price will continue to rise, and the natural gas industry will usher in new development.
The compressed air industry reached its lowest point in the second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009. However, Xi'an Ultra-Filtration is an innovative enterprise. As early as 2005, it began to research and promote new energy-saving and emission-reduction products. Its market share and profit margin were still guaranteed. In the natural gas field, with the construction of large natural gas pipelines such as the Sichuan-Eastward Gas Transmission and the Second West-East Gas Transmission Line in China, more cities along the routes began to build and develop CNG filling stations, and more of this type of products were needed. Our company has always believed that product safety and quality are the top priority, performance indicators are the second, and cost is the third. During the 10 years of our company's production and application of natural gas products, we have provided nearly 500 products to domestic and foreign customers, and each one has operated safely, winning wide praise from domestic and foreign users. In 2008, we also entered a new field by researching and producing equipment for oilfield associated gas and flare gas recovery and utilization. Currently, we have released products worth over 8 million yuan for oil and gas fields. Thus, our company has three markets in the natural gas field alone: domestic filling stations, foreign filling stations, and oilfield gas and flare gas recovery. In addition, the company has its original military product advantages and the advantages of compressed air energy-saving and emission-reduction products, as well as new developed coalbed methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide process gas products. Xi'an Ultra-Filtration is fully capable of overcoming the crisis and achieving a turnaround in the face of adversity.
